New Treatment Options on the Horizon for PMR

Although it sounds like a science fiction term, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) is actually an inflammatory disorder that causes muscle pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and back. PMR has no one cause or cure, and typically worsens after long periods of inactivity. Those diagnosed with PMR often find mornings to be the most difficult and painful time of day.

Treatment of PMR

PMR can be managed by a variety of different methods, including consistent exercise, a healthy diet, and taking a low dosage of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as ibuprofen or Aleve. The application of low dose corticosteroids, however, is the most common treatment to relieve PMR symptoms. Unfortunately, this treatment can also have a variety of negative side effects over a long period of time.

Negative Side Effects

According to Mayo Clinic, long term use of corticosteroids as a treatment can have serious, negative side effects. These side effects include, but are not limited to:

  • Weight gain
  • Loss of bone density/weakening of bones (osteoporosis)
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Cataract formation

Future Research and New Options

Current treatment options may not be the best solution for PMR, but there is hope on the horizon! Researchers at New England Research Associates are evaluating a new potential oral treatment option for patients suffering from PMR, and are looking for volunteers to participate in a clinical study. Qualified participants will receive study-related care at no cost and compensation for travel. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with PMR, you may be eligible!
