Designated an awareness holiday by the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations, October 29, 2018, celebrates World Psoriasis Day! World Psoriasis Day was founded in 2016 with the mission of educating, providing community support, and raising funds to seek out the best treatment options for Psoriasis or Psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis and Psoriatic arthritis impacts the lives of more than seven million people in the U.S., and 125 million worldwide.
What is Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, itchy, painful and scaly skin patches to appear across multiple regions of the body. Nearly 30% of all diagnosed Psoriasis patients are also later diagnosed with Psoriatic arthritis, or arthritis caused by the continued swelling of the joints.
Are there other types of Psoriasis?
According to Mayo Clinic, there are seven common types of Psoriasis:
- Plaque Psoriasis: Most common form
- Nail Psoriasis
- Guttate Psoriasis
- Inverse Psoriasis
- Pustular Psoriasis
- Erythrodermic Psoriasis
- Psoriatic Arthritis
Each on of these specific types of Psoriasis are slightly different in appearance, ranging from white, to silver to red; however, they each originate with the same symptoms caused by excess skin cell buildup.
What can I do to participate in World Psoriasis Day?
Psoriasis not only affects the skin, but it can also deeply impact a person’s self esteem, self perception and sense of worth. Supporting Psoriasis fighters in your community, as well as participating in fundraisers and Psoriasis events, will go towards researching to find potential new treatment options.
The research team at Stamford Therapeutics seeks to further celebrate World Psoriasis Day by continually searching for potential new treatment options in Stamford! If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Psoriasis, you may be eligible to participate in clinical research study. Qualified candidates will receive study-related care and medication at no cost, as well as receive compensation for travel. To learn more on how you can be involved, CLICK HERE.
