Healthy Aging Month encourages seniors to bring their health to the forefront
Doctors are researching new ways to help seniors improve their physical well-being

STAMFORD – Healthy Aging Month is all about focusing on the positive aspects of getting older. It’s a great time to get started on better health practices that could change the lives of seniors.

For seniors ages 50 +, arthritis is an extremely common condition that can cause symptoms like joint pain and stiffness. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, although some more common than others.

“Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear arthritis. It gets worse over time and interfere with activities. The pain can really just bring you down. We’re hopeful that potential new treatment options being evaluated at Stamford can help those struggling to manage pain associated with OA,” says Dr. David Radin, Principal Investigator at Stamford Therapeutics.

The doctors at Stamford Therapeutics Consortium are currently evaluating potential new treatment options for osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis, or OA is a degenerative arthritis that occurs when the cartilage at the end of bones wears down over time. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory type of arthritis that can also cause joint pain and swelling, but occurs in approximately 30 percent of people with psoriasis.

Dr. Stuart Novack is also positive about the potential new options for psoriatic arthritis. “Psoriatic arthritis can really impair your quality of life and physical function. We have a void to fill when it comes to potential new treatment options.”

Healthy Aging Month is about inspiring people to get up and do something that might change their life and improve their physical well-being. Participating in a research study allows you to play an active role in your health, which may improve the quality of your life.

Qualified participants in the studies at Stamford Therapeutics may have access to potential new treatments for OA or psoriatic arthritis. Participants often receive care from board-certified physicians and other medical staff, and may receive compensation for time and travel expenses.

Doctors at Stamford are optimistic that these studies will provide effective alternatives to any existing treatments for both forms of arthritis and are excited to be part of innovative research.
